Asked for a writing prompt on my Twitter feed and this is what came out of it. Not my usual genre
Drip. Drip. Drip.
A loud pounding at the door.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
A sudden crash and the door burst open, several heavily armed police officers stormed into the house, guns before them, alert to any dangers. They made their way through the bottom floor of the home, carefully checking each room.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Up the stairs to the next floor. Voices calling out, demanding that the owner of the home show himself. Each room of the second floor checked but no one found.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Up to the third floor of the old home, allegedly haunted, allegedly the site of occult activity, murder, and other unsavory activities. The police believed none of this. They were on the trail of one of the worst serial killers in history. Years of sleuthing, following dead ends, clues, and tidbits of information had finally lead them here.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
They milled around on the third floor, puzzled. They were certain this was the place, certain they had finally tracked down the murderer. Everything they had done up to till now pointed them to this location. The murderer had to be here!
Drip. Drip. Drip.
One of them notices blood running down a wall.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Shouts. The pounding of boots, searching for a way into the attic. And exclamation and the police gathered at the bottom of the attic stairs, cleverly hidden, and pulled them down, guns drawn, flashlights aiming upwards, breaking the darkness.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Slowly, carefully up the stairs, cautious of a trap, several officers made their way into the attic. A single desk, lit by a candle, a figure hunched over a book.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Blood streaming down from the pages, pooling on the floor.
Drip. Drip.
Exclamations of disgust and horror as they approached the desiccated corpse.
Drip.
One final drop.
The corpse disintegrates into a pile of dust. Coughing, wiping of faces. One looks down at the book where blood still glistened on the page. A signature. One word.
